California resident Derrick Callella has pleaded guilty to federal charges after authorities accused him of sending fake ransom messages to Nancy Guthrie’s family while the search for the missing 84-year-old was underway. Although his arrest is connected to the case, investigators have emphasized that he is not accused of kidnapping Nancy Guthrie and has not been linked to her disappearance itself.
Instead, prosecutors say Callella exploited the family’s anguish by pretending to have information about the alleged kidnapping.
His motive, according to court documents, has now been revealed.
A Family Desperate for Answers
Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home near Tucson, Arizona, in late January 2026 under circumstances investigators have described as highly suspicious.
Authorities reported finding blood belonging to Guthrie at the scene, while her phone, wallet, medication, and other essential belongings were left behind. Because of the evidence collected, the FBI continues to treat the case as an active kidnapping-for-ransom investigation.
As the investigation unfolded, Guthrie’s family made emotional public appeals for information, hoping someone with knowledge of her whereabouts would come forward.
Those appeals, prosecutors say, caught Derrick Callella’s attention.
