I opened my email and found a message from my legal counsel, forwarded directly to Arthur’s attorney just twenty minutes prior. It contained the formal notice of our permanent relocation abroad, fully backed by the sole custody agreement Arthur had so eagerly signed without reading the fine print. Because he had waived all parental rights to speed up the divorce and avoid child support, he no longer had any legal say in where his daughters lived.

I didn’t reply to his texts. I blocked his number, removed the SIM card from my phone, and slipped it into the seatback pocket.
“Mommy, look!” Maya pointed out the window. The sun was setting over the Atlantic, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold, violet, and deep crimson. “It’s so beautiful.”
“It is, sweetheart,” I said, putting my arms around both of my daughters.
Arthur and his family were welcome to the apartment, the car, and the bitter reality of the lies they had built their future upon. They had traded a loyal family for a mirage.
As the plane pushed deeper into the night, heading toward a life of peace, security, and boundless opportunity, I finally felt the weight of the last eight years completely evaporate.
